Tafe lecturer and local country music singer, Vice Chair SACCM (from Oct 21, 2006)

John Callaghan is one of the most complete artists on the music scene today.

His music career got into swing in the early 80s when he started to write his own material.

At the time he was lead singer for "Stratus", which won "Best Harmony Group" in a Battle of the bands competition. Two years later John embarked on a solo career which quickly resulted in his inclusion in the Australian Country Music "Starmaker Quest" Top 20!

"Mr Moon" and other hits followed and John was asked to be a support act to Johnny Cash during part of his Australian tour which climaxed in Rockhampton with an open air concert drawing 12,500 people.

Due to his versatility, John has played with and been support to such famous acts as Don Williams, Margaret Ulrich, Barry McGuire, Randy Stonehill, Jack Clement, to name a few, as well as appearing regularly on many television shows, one of those being "Reg Lindsay’s Country Homestead", early in his career.

John has won many awards for music, include "Best Male Vocalist – Gospel" in the Queensland Music Awards.

In 1987 John wrote, recorded and released "Come on Australia" for the America’s Cup Defence which debuted at No. 21 on the Australian play list.

This was followed up with the album "Callaghan’s Gold" which was received by both the music industry and the general public with great support and enthusiasm. All songs were penned by John himself and the 1993 Goldfields "Centenary Song" (which John was commissioned to write), was sung live on many TV shows throughout the country and appeared for a short time on the Ansett inflight music programs.

John has also completed successful tours of England, Ireland and parts of South East Asia.

Crossing over from country to contemporary has paid dividends for John, often described as having one of the most extensive vocal range in the music scene today, John has highlighted his singing ability in his latest album "Stand Up".

So much so, that the title track from the album attracted immense interest from both major political parties during the last election. Both parties considered it to be exactly the theme they were trying to capture.

His patriotism is reflected in not only "Stand Up" but in "Pioneering Ladies" which is a tribute to the ladies who helped settle Australia.

John has truly shaken the "Cowboy" image which served its purpose to start John in the Recording industry. His song, "Waltzing Matera" has proven to be popular and has shown John’s song writing versatility.

His potential is yet to be reached and time will clearly show that he has the talent and ability to be classed amongst the best Australian singers/song writers.

John is known for his unique contribution to the Australian music industry in the same way Paul Kelly, John Williamson and others have!

Often described as an Australian "John Denver", his achievements so far are a testament to his resilience and faith.

To elaborate a little more on this, John's unique vocal ability enables him to sing other peoples song with uncanny similarity, none better than when he sings his John Denver songs. So much so that he now includes a special JD segment in all his concerts. Others have commented that when he sings his Denver songs, close your eyes and you would think John Denver is there in person.

He also spends much of his "spare" time singing in prisons, schools old peoples homes and hospitals where his special brand of music and charisma lifts those who hear him play and inspires achievement.

John is a polished, professional musician and entertainer who has never lost sight of his Country origin and upbringing – this shines through in the songs he writes and sings.

John is also involved in jingle writing and appears in jingles for the GWN TV Network which is seen State wide in WA. His best known adds at present (in which John plays the major roll), are the Miller Hince Shell and Kalgoorlie Cafe.

John’s new Christian Album "Beginnings" released recently is being received very well. It is a collection of songs that John has written and songs that have been requested at his concerts over the last few years.

John has just completed a successful five week – 7,700+ Km Concert Tour of Queensland, from the Gold Coast to Cooktown. (2005)
